WHY IS MY CAR HEATER NOT WORKING?

It’s that time of year again to turn off our air conditioners and switch on the heat. (Expecting warm air to rush through our vents first thing when we turn our car on is our only desire.) Coming to expect warm air to rush through our morning vents is only an afterthought. But this morning that desire has been crushed because there's no hot air coming from the car heater.

Today’s discomfort, combined with the bitter cold, is not only the crippling consequence of dreading the morning rush hour but the realization that your windshield will not defrost. Not only does this mean a chilly scraping ride to work but this may also mean a long winter ahead.

Don’t worry, put on your winter coat because we’ll help you understand why your car’s heater does not work and how we can fix it.

How does the heater in your car work?

In common Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICE) to include hybrids the cab heating system works off of the engine cooling system’s circulation of hot coolant to the car's heater core. The heat is then transferred into the cab via a blower fan.

Type of failing heater symptoms and what they mean

No air blowing from vents at all.

No air from the air vents is usually an electrical problem with the blower motor, blower motor resistor or fuse. Somewhere in this collection of three systems is a failure point that prevents the blower motor from blowing air.

The first step to fix this issue is to check your fuse box blower motor fuse. If the blower motor fuse is in good shape, not broken. The electrical problem is a little deeper. You could at this point replace the blower motor, blower motor resistor and the blower motor switch as a shot in the dark or you can isolate the problem with diagnostics .

Either way, at this point take it to a repair facility unless you’re savvy with DIY (Do It Yourself).

Only cold air blowing from vents.

When only cold air is blowing from your vents the problem is not an electrical issue but a coolant issue . Your heater core does not have enough coolant circulation to warm up the air being pushed into the cab by the blower motor .

The heater core has either clogged and is no longer circulating coolant or it has no coolant in it to circulate . Both conditions mean you can’t defrost your windows but one condition is more serious than the other.

Not enough coolant means you're losing it somewhere and if this is not addressed it could lead to an engine overheat that could mean catastrophic engine failure or being stranded with a hot engine and no cabin heat. Correcting the coolant loss or topping off the cooling system should solve your problem temporarily.

Finding and fixing the coolant loss would be the permanent fix . Poor circulation through the heater core can be detected by verifying your coolant level is normal in the radiator and the radiator reservoir. You would then need to feel the heater hoses going to the heater core . If the heater core is circulating properly, then both hoses should feel warm to the touch.

If one is hot but the other is cold then the heater core is not circulating properly and would need to be replaced. This repair is usually quite extensive and can get messy so most people have it done at a repair facility.

Hot air only blowing on windshield

Hot air is blowing, but it’s only on the windshield. Freakin’ outstanding. This condition means that your overall engine cooling system and heating blower element is working properly.

What commonly fails the heater blend door that controls how the air is distributed through the cab of the vehicle. The blend doors are designed to fail in the windshield defrost position to ensure that your windshield would remain clear in the event of the blend failure.

There’s over 200 parts in your engine that can fail at any time and cause a breakdown. Lucky for you it can fail catastrophically in only a few ways. To understand what type of engine failure situation you may be in, it's important to understand how our engines break down and what we can do about them.

Your engine breaks on either the “top end” the cylinder head or the “bottom end” the engine block. The cylinder head (top end) is made up of intake/ exhaust valves and camshafts. The bottom end (engine block) is made up of the crankshaft, bearings, pistons and piston rings. With these technicalities out of the way let's get into the most common catastrophic engine failures and what you can do about them.

Top End Failure

Blown Head Gasket

The first and most common top end engine failure is the OVERHEAT or in mechanics terms, a blown head gasket. The symptoms you’ll experience with this car breakdown is constant overheating and/or a rough engine running condition.

Overheating occurs due to exhaust escaping into the cooling/ radiator system through the head gasket and boils your car’s coolant faster than your radiator can cool it down. If your coolant is not boiling but escaping into your exhaust system producing white smoke or loss of coolant overtime, you will also overheat.

What’s actually happening is not a broken head gasket itself. Your cylinder head is aluminum and when it gets too hot it morphs becoming uneven. Causing little spaces to form between the gasket and engine block. Awesome, what can you do about it? A top end engine rebuild.

But before we get into that, let's cover the other most common top end engine failures.

Burnt/ Broken Valves

Broken or burnt intake or exhaust valves would cause a feeling of a hard misfire or a car not running at all. Burnt or broken valves reduce engine compression causing the engine misfires or running rough.

If too many cylinders lose too much compression, your engine will not run at all. You may experience this engine failing condition if you commonly wait months to do your oil change when it’s already overdue. Another mistake is using low quality cheap motor oil found in your average $30 oil change ads.

Paying a little more now or paying a little more later makes no difference to the repair facility. So here we are, a little later. What can you do about it? Top end engine rebuild.

Bottom End Failures

Knocking

Knock knock, who’s there? Busted crankshaft bearings. You can identify a high pitch ticking sound from the top of your engine (usually lifters not having oil), and the low knocking from a worn out bearing by the sound. If it sounds like a “tick-tick-tick”, it won’t sound like a “knock-knock-knock”.

A tick is part of the top end, and knock is part of the bottom end. Along with the knock you will usually find low oil pressure. Your quick-fix here is to conduct an oil change and hope for the best. A low knocking noise will eventually end in a crankshaft or piston failure and you will need to be towed at that point.

Waiting too long to address this may cause an engine rod to “shoot” out of the side of the engine block creating a hole. This will mean extra cost later when you have to pay for an engine “core” because your engine block will not be rebuildable at that point. What can you do about it now before it's too late? Bottom end engine rebuild.

Oil Consumption

If your oil is disappearing in excessive amounts, more than 2 quarts between oil changes. Des Moines Washington, we have a problem. Oil consumption happens in mostly 2 ways, it is either leaking out or burning through the exhaust.

An external oil leak would be noticeable pretty much wherever the car is parked. Leaks of this type are caused by either bad gaskets or on higher mileage engines, blow-by, excessive engine pressure passing through worn piston rings. The opposite of blowby also due to worn piston rings is oil consumption via the combustion chamber burning away in the exhaust.

Keeping the oil topped off while knowing its burning or leaking away is bad for the environment, but theoretically allows you to extend the inevitable until the end.

Seized Engine

Your engine shuts off on the road or fails to start. Symptoms you may experience would be a humming sound coming from your starter or no sound at all. While this symptom has similarities to a bad starter, the difference is the starter cannot turn the engine over because the engine is seized.

This condition occurs when the engine does not have enough lubrication causing the pistons to seize together with the cylinder walls. Loss of oil pressure for any reason indicated by a red oil light on the dash usually leads to this condition.

Loss of oil pressure can be caused by not enough oil, broken oil pump, engine overheat, worn crankshaft bearings etc. But what can be done to fix it? A bottom end engine rebuild.

Common brake failure symptoms are a pedal that sinks to the floor, running a stop sign or traffic light, pulling to one side or the other, loud grinding noises, grinding vibrations and tire fire. These conditions at the wrong time could be fatal.

It's important to check your vehicle inspection report and follow the technicians recommendations when conducting general maintenance. If you do find yourself in a situation needing brake repair, you may experience these symptoms of brake failure.

Spongy or Sinking Brake Pedal

When the brake pedal is spongy, sinking or just falling to the floor. Air has likely entered your brake system. Air in the brake lines usually enters the brake system from a brake fluid leak somewhere in the system.

To correct this problem, 1st you would have to identify where your brake system is sucking in air. A close inspection of all of your brake master cylinder, brake lines and brake calipers needs to be done to find a brake fluid leak. After the leak is found, the broken brake component must be replaced then a brake bleeding is conducted to remove any remaining air in the system.

If there are no visible leaks in the brake system, the likely culprit is the brake fluid itself. A brake fluid flush should be conducted every 60k miles or per your vehicle manufacturer's specifications and maintenance tables. Old brake fluid attracts condensation. Water in the brake fluid over time collects and causes brake pedal compression issues. Regular brake fluid service or a brake fluid flush will prevent this condition form occurring.

Grinding Noise or Grinding Feeling in the Brake Pedal

Grinding occurs when your brake pad material has worn out completely and the metal backing of the pad material is grinding against your brake rotor. This condition occurs when you wait too long to do your brakes. The grinding not only causes your car not to stop, but it also heats up the rim and tire of your vehicle causing a fire.

As you might have guessed, most vehicle fires are caused by metal on metal brake failure conditions. When this happens to your vehicle you will need to replace your brake pads and brake rotors. Doing a "pad slap" or only replacing your brake pads is never a safe alternative and will never be conducted by a reputable repair facility. The reason you have to replace both is because the grinding of your brake rotors causes deep grooves in the rotor that would not allow a new brake pad to seat properly and can fail prematurely.

Brake pads and rotors are replaced during most brake jobs. A scheduled brake job should take about 3-4 hours for both the front and rear of your vehicle. Brakes should on average last about 30k miles or roughly two years.

Squeaking Brakes

Squeaking is caused by either a brake pad minimum indicator, poor quality brake pad material or dirty brakes. Minimum brake pad indicators are installed on most brake pads and are designed to start squeaking when your brake pad is at about 2 mm of thickness, 20% brake life, or about 2 months before your pads and rotors start grinding metal to metal.

When you get your regular maintenance, your vehicle inspection should inform you that your brake pads are within the service zone of 4 mm or 40%. If your brake pads are new, then pay close attention to the brand of brake pad that was used. High quality brake pads such as Okebono, Power Stop and Napa Premium brake pads are guaranteed not to squeak. The cheaper alternative brake pads, some imported from Asia, do not guarantee no noise or anything at all.

Some aftermarket brands don't even guarantee to stop your car. Make sure you choose the right brake pads, brake rotor and the right repair facility to conduct your brake service.

Brake Lights and Other Brake Abnormalities

A glowing red brake light indicates low brake fluid or an electrical failure of your brake sysem. If the light is RED, that means you need to service your brakes right away to prevent an accident and usually means your vehicle is not safe to drive. The first thing you should do is check your brake fluid level.

If the level is low, top off your brake fluid with the specified brake fluid weight such as DOT 3 or DOT 4. Newer vehicles use DOT 5. When topping off your brake fluid cleared your light, it's a good idea to check in with your auto repair mechanic and determine where your fluid went. Brake fluid is not suppose to get low, unless you have a leak. Backyard mechanics will claim the fluid "evaporates".

Brake fluid serviced regularly does not evaporate. Brake lights are also caused by electrical faults in the brake system. You would need to scan the brake system faults and determine why the light is on. This is usually not a DIY or Do It Yourself type of problem to solve and a parts store like Autozone and O'relly would likely not be able to detect. Your solution would normally be found by scheduling a brake diagnostic with a reputable repair facility.

HOW THE AUTOMOTIVE BATTERY CHANGED THE WORLD

There is a story you can read here saying that the electric starter motor was first developed by Cadillac because the original hand-crank starter actually killed a man.

The original handcrank starters were both difficult and dangerous. Many women did not have the strength to turn them, and so could not drive without a man present to start the vehicle. It’s safe to say that the electric starter has transformed society, and the electric starter, of course, would not have been possible with asupply of electricity, which needed to be mobile. In other words, it needed energy storage.

The impact of the automotive battery goes beyond starting your vehicle’s engine.Before the battery was put into use in cars, headlights had to be run on gas. Imagine pulling up to the fuel pump and topping off your headlights.

Without an electric supply, we would also be left without several other features we take for granted:

The larger impact of the automotive battery

Battery maintenance

Take care of your battery, and it will take care of you. Basic maintenance to get the most out of your battery includes:

Keeping the connections free of corrosion. You can buy a wirebrush and the appropriate cleaning chemicals at your local auto parts store.
Topping off the water for those batteries that are unsealed (always use distilled water for this).
Keeping the battery in a charged state. Batteries that are left with a charge of 12.4 volts or less will actually expire sooner, due to a chemical process known as “sulfation”. This commonly occurs if you repeatedly drive short distances, because the battery uses some juice to start the vehicle, but the alternator doesn’t run long enough to replenish the charge.

MOST IMPORTANT INVENTIONS IN THE HISTORY OF THE CAR

There are a few major inventions that have shaped the evolution of the automobile, and thus society at large.

We’ve tried to keep this list short by leaving out some of the things that haven’t greatly changed motoring for the average consumer.

Take ABS brakes, for example: there might be more accidents (and more severe accidents) without them, but progress would probably not have gone in a different direction if they had never been invented. We would probably still live and drive more or less the same.

Without the inventions on this list, though, the driving experience would look totally different.

1. The internal combustion engine

Before the internal combustion engine, cars were run by the steam engine. The combustion engine proved to be more energy-efficient, and thus was key to making automobiles that could travel fast and far at affordable cost.

In addition, combustion engines were quieter and more compact than any steam engines at the time. We’ll never know what motoring would have become if society had stuck with the steam engine, but it would certainly be different, and cars would probably be less affordable and convenient to use.

2. The transmission

We could go on and on about the different innovations in automotive transmissions (like the planetary gear system or the torque converter), and all the different types of automatic transmissions that have come along over the past several decades.

For the sake of brevity, though, we’ll just lump them all in together. The transmission and all of its various advancements have made driving easier for consumers, which in turn makes vehicles more popular.

More importantly, they’ve made it possible to drive faster and further. The range of output by a motor is severely limited without gearing, which means we’d have to drive much slower, which, in turn, limits the distance you can drive.

3. The diesel engine

The diesel engine has greatly lowered the cost of industry and transportation, and thus the cost of goods.

As BBC reports in an article about the impact of the diesel engine,

“After World War Two, ever more powerful and efficient diesel engines led to ever more enormous ships. Fuel accounts for around 70% of the costs of shipping goods around the world. Scientist Vaclav Smil argues that steam-powered globalisation would have grown much more slowly than diesel allowed.”

One might wonder if this is really pertinent to the automobile, because most American consumer cars are gasoline engines. However, the diesel engine has affected modern drivers in numerous ways.

The trucks that haul fuel from the field to refinery and then to the pump station are diesel engines. Cars manufactured overseas are brought over by ships with diesel engines. The equipment used in mining and manufacturing goods (like consumer cars) is largely powered by diesel. The cost-effectiveness of diesel affects the prices of a vast majority – if not all – of goods.

Additionally, many consumer cars are powered by diesel. In fact, according to Popular Mechanics , roughly 50% of all cars in Europe are diesel-operated.

We could quite literally go on all day about the many ways diesel engines have affected both the modern economy and modern motoring.

4. The automotive battery

At one point, production cars came without an electrical system. The headlights were powered by gas and the vehicle was started by way of a hand crank, which is as difficult as to use as it sounds.

The manual crank was more than difficult, too - it was dangerous. This story alleges that one driver got stuck on the roadside when her car stalled, and she didn’t have the strength to turn it over.

If that sounds like an inconvenience, it’s trivial compared to the guy who stopped to help her out as he was driving by. The motor backfired and the crank struck him in the face, breaking his jaw. Rough day, to be sure, but it gets much worse: he then caught gangrene and was dead within a year. It is this event, allegedly, that inspired Cadillac to introduce the electric starter motor in their vehicles.

This, of course, was enabled by the car battery, which also enables other conveniences like headlights, interior lights, the radio, modern electronics like sensors and computers, and, of course, the onboard diagnostics computer.

The same batteries that have been developed and mass-produced for automobiles have laid the groundwork for the batteries used in diesel vehicles, RVs, boats, solar arrays, and electric vehicles. In other words, the existence of the modern automotive battery has greatly shaped progress in the 20th and 21st centuries.

5. On-board diagnostics

Some car enthusiasts lament the advent of electronics in automobiles, because it means that there are that many more parts to contend with. However, onboard diagnostics does make diagnosing issues much easier, much of the time.

To be fair to traditionalists, adding more parts does give you more parts that can fail. For example, electronic sensors seem to fail a lot more than mechanical parts. On the other hand, most of us will agree we’re happy to spend a pittance on replacing sensors if it keeps us from having more painful repairs.

Whatever your stance is, OBD-II has transformed the automotive industry - from how cars are built, to how they’re repaired, to the entire ownership experience. Thanks to onboard diagnostics (and the rest of the vehicle’s computer systems), we’re usually well-aware of a problem before it becomes urgent.

Electronics have certainly increased the purchase price of modern vehicles, but that has to be weighed against the inconvenience of not catching problems before they blossom into larger, potentially catastrophic ones.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT DRIVING IN WINTER CONDITIONS

Here are a few notes we want drivers to be aware of during the winter months:

1. Being prepared for roadside emergencies is more important than ever in the winter time.

There are two main reasons for this:

getting stuck on the side of the road is more likely, and
getting stuck on the side of the road can be dangerous. Not only do you run the risk of freezing, you also have to worry about another driver losing control on sketchy roads (perhaps exactly the way you did).

We recommend having an emergency kit in your car for winter driving, which we’ve covered in this article.

2. No heat or low heat? Check your radiator.

Your car’s heater works by transferring heat from the engine to the heater core, via the coolant circulating through your cooling system. Even a small drop in your coolant level can mess with the functioning of your cooling system, and make your car blow luke-warm air.

3. Tire tips

Tire pressure drops when the temp does, os check the PSI and inflate as necessary
Use all-weather tires in the winter
Make sure your tread is good, as low tread = low traction in snow and rain

4. For driving in snow, you want weight over the drive wheels.

In general, this means choose a FWD vehicle over a RWD. The only exception is when you have one of the rare vehicles when the motor is mounted in the rear.

If your only option is a RWD, you can get better traction with by putting extra weight over the rear axle. Sandbags are a cheap option.

5. A word about rocksalt

Rocksalt is one of those things that’s cheap to purchase, and priceless to have at home when there’s ice or snow. The roads could be plowed and sanded, but that’s not going to do you much good if you can’t get up and down your own driveway.

However, it’s important to know that rocksalt can harm or kill trees, shrubs and gardens (rocksalt is actually a go-to method for killing stumps and trees). This happens when the salt is still present after a thaw, and the moisture washes it down into the soil. The roots get dehydrated, and water is already scarce for plants when temps are below freezing.

Be conscientious about where you apply rocksalt, so it doesn’t wash off your driveway and onto plant roots.

6. Windshield washer fluid is essential on winter roads

Snow usually means sand on the roads, which makes for dirty windshields. Of course, your windshield washer fluid won’t do you much good if it’s frozen. Make sure you get the kind with antifreeze in it, and keep it topped off in freezing conditions.

7. You might want to run a different oil in the winter, particularly in extreme climates.

Oil can gel up in extreme cold. Even in milder climates like Western Washington, thicker oils can fail to lubricate your engine components thoroughly, causing extra wear and tear.

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR NEW AND USED CAR INVENTORY IN 2022

As you’d probably guess, the high vehicle prices over the last two or so years have been caused by low supply and high demand. Here is the sequence of events that the experts say are behind the current conditions:

Reduced production of vehicles due to lockdowns, starting early in 2020
The micro chip shortage began around the same time, also due to COVID. This shortage is hampering auto production
Global shipping issues beginning in 2020 have made it hard to ship whatever inventory is available

Increasing demand over the course of 2021, due to multiple reasons , Reduced production of vehicles due to lockdowns, starting early in 2020 such as people moving out of cities, people avoiding public transport because of COVID concerns, and unusually low interest rates on auto loans.

The shortage started in the new car market, and frustrated buyers ended up turning toward used vehicles. That supply was also quickly diminished, and will struggle to recover as long as the new car supply remains tight.

So what can be done about the low vehicle supply?

Fixing it starts with addressing the root cause - the chip shortage. There’s two ways to do this: increase production (difficult and slow) or decrease usage. This recent article by Car and Driver talks about some features that auto makers have cut from their vehicles to reduce the number of chips that each unit uses. Putting fewer chips in each vehicle, of course, means more vehicles can be completed. But that can only go so far.

The only thing that’s really going to move the car inventory back in the direction of normal is a return to normal levels of chip production. Still, once that’s achieved, it will take some time to address the backlog of demand.

It also doesn’t help that the global supply chain is a mess. US ports have massive backups, and most of our chips come from Asia.

Addressing the chip shortage

The US government is exploring strategies to increase domestic manufacturing, but sentiment indicates that this won’t increase US access to chips before production by Asian manufacturers catches up. It’s still important, though, as US auto makers will want to avoid this crisis ever happening again.

In fact, this article by Motorious indicates that US auto makers are now investing in producing their own chips. The article also notes that Toyota, mysteriously, seems to be ahead of the curve with chip inventory and is promising a return to auto production that well outpaces its US competitors.

Navigating the auto market in 2022

The general sentiment seems to be that we can expect the same market conditions for vehicles for most, if not all, of 2022 . Industry experts in chips put the chip shortage on a similar timeline to recovery.

There are three things we can suggest for navigating these weird times:

If buying a car is a huge need for you, be patient and be willing to settle for your second or third choice
Consider buying a Toyota. We have no way of knowing if Toyota truly will have more inventory on the market than other auto makers, but you can always see what’s out there.
Take good care of your current vehicles, because it’s going to be both difficult and expensive to replace them.

As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Modern vehicles ought to run into the 150-200K miles range at the least. Any major repairs needed before then are either poor luck or poor maintenance.

Do your routine maintenance at the recommended mileage intervals, and check your engine light when it comes on. If something feels or sounds off with your vehicle, it’s best to get it inspected as soon as possible. Putting it off can cost you a ton of money in avoidable repair bills.

WHAT KIND OF MOTOR OIL SHOULD I USE?

There are two main criteria to pay attention to when it comes to selecting motor oil:

Viscosity (often referred to as weight)
Synthetic vs non-synthetic

First of all, if you’re under warranty, always follow the terms of the warranty, which may specify the type of oil to use.

Second, even if you’re not under warranty, you should follow any recommendations your owner’s manual makes in regards to oil. Some cars require either conventional or synthetic, and this will be specified if that’s the case.

However, with things like viscosity, there are sometimes reasons to deviate a little, and we’ll explain why below.

Why is viscosity important?

Viscosity, as you probably remember from science class, refers to the thickness of liquid matter. When it come to motor oil, the viscosity is expressed in two numbers, such as 5W-20 or 10W-30.

Lower numbers mean a lower viscosity; in other words, the substance will be “thinner”. Think of high oil viscosity ratings as syrup, and lower ones as water.

The first number represents the viscosity at winter temperatures, and the latter represents the viscosity at typical engine operating temperature. In especially cold weather (say, 0 degrees Fahrenheit or lower), your engine will run sluggishly with high viscosity oils. This is the one situation where your average consumer may actually need to deviate from the recommended viscosity. In this case, you would only want to deviate on the first number, and never by much.

The function of motor oil, after all, is to lubricate the components in your motor by working through the motor and leaving a film on each component. If the oil is too thin, the coating won’t be sufficient for protection. If the oil is too thick, it won’t work its way through all the moving parts fast enough, leaving components unprotected at times.

You should never deviate from the second number , because, again, that’s the viscosity for engine operating temp, and a majority of your driving will be with the vehicle running at temp. Thinner oils will heat up faster, which can compound the thinning effect. Thicker oils will leave the components of your engine exposed to wear and tear when the potential for wear and tear is highest.

Is synthetic oil a good investment?

Some vehicles require either conventional or synthetic oil, but most vehicle owners will be able to decide for themselves.

Synthetic oil is a more expensive oil, but this article by Nerd Wallet declares that it’s worth the price because you get more mileage out of your vehicle.

Some sources will also tell you that you can run for longer between oil changes with synthetic. We’d like to emphasize here , yet again, that you should always abide by the terms of your warranty. However, if your vehicle is no longer under warranty, it’s up to you decide if you’re comfortable testing the limits.

Synthetic oils have some of the compounds that occur in conventional oils removed, and they also have some extra things added for performance. The result is an oil that’s designed to offer better protection at extreme temperatures and result in less sludge build-up – both of which are great for reducing wear and tear on your motor.

Does the brand matter?

Motor oil manufacturers claim to have specially engineered formulas for their oils, but popular brands all meet standards set by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Only buy oil with the “SAE certified” badge on the bottle.

Auto enthusiasts and mechanics sometimes have a preferred brand. If somebody you trust can adequately explain why one specific oil is better than the rest, that may be reason enough for you. But that needs to be weighed against price differences. You might save multiple dollars per quart between different brands.

At the end of the day, just remember that the following things all matter infinitely more than the brand:

using the right viscosity
changing your oil on time
keeping the oil level at full – not under-full, not over-full

WHY GAS PRICES ARE SO HIGH, AND HOW TO DEAL WITH IT

The national average price for a gallon of gas is at the highest its been in seven years . There are multiple factors that are driving the cost up, and they seem to indicate that we can only expect minor relief in the near future. So what can we expect, and how can we deal with this increased expense?

Why are gas prices so high?

2020 was a slow year of crude production, thanks largely to COVID-19 workplace restrictions. This wasn’t an issue last year, when everybody was sitting at home and the demand for fuel was low. As the economy reopens, demand has surged past supply.

But there’s more to the picture, apparently. Articles by Forbes and NPR both reference OPEC being tight with their supply of oil, simply to keep profits high.

It’s also worth noting that fuel always goes up a little in the summer, due to the use of expensive summer blends that meet environmental regulations. Consumers can expect a small reduction in the price per gallon in the coming months as we shift to winter blends.

How to save on gas

There are always the obvious things you can do, like driving less and carpooling when possible.

Here are a few other things you can do to significantly reduce your fuel consumption and/or the price you pay per gallon.

1. Check your gas cap. Always make sure it’s screwed on tightly. Also realize that just because the cap still seats doesn’t mean it seats properly. If the seal is inadequate, you’ll lose pressure and, therefore, gas mileage. This is an easy and cheap fix you can do for significant savings.

2. Drive easy. This means accelerate slowly and drive at a reasonable speed. According to the Department of Energy most cars get their best fuel economy at or below 50 mph. This is not permission to drive under the speed limit, but it is a good reason to not speed.

3. Keep your tires inflated to the proper PSI. Low tire pressure increases resistance and reduces your momentum. Invest a few dollars into a small tire pressure checker and give your tires a quick check when you fuel up.

4. Decrease weight and air resistance. Driving around with heavy cargo in the trunk or the roof carrier will affect your mpg. Also consider that roof carriers will affect your aerodynamics and add to your fuel consumption, so it’s best to leave it off when you don’t need it.

5. Make sure your car is running properly. Routine maintenance, such as tune ups and keeping your fluids full and fresh, will keep your car running at peak performance. You can also get a checkup on your car to make sure that it is running at peak performance.

6. Use a lower viscosity oil. A thinner oil offers less resistance to the moving parts in your engine and increases fuel economy. If you’re unsure about what types of oil are acceptable for your vehicle, you can consult your manual, your dealership, or your local mechanic.

7. Fuel system maintenance. You can use fuel treatment products, change your fuel filter, or have a fuel system cleaning done on your vehicle. For consultation, or for help with these tasks, contact a mechanic you trust.

8. Find the places along your daily commute that have the best prices, and make it a point to fuel up when you’re already close by. The availability of new vehicles has been at a historic low for the last year or so. This has taken a toll on prices. What’s more, the demand for new vehicles is moving into used vehicles and causing shortages there, too.

With cars being both expensive and hard to find, now, more than ever, it’s important to take proper care of the vehicles you own.

Why are prices so high?

We’ve seen inflated prices across many markets recently. Part of this has to do with the high price of shipping. Part of it is probably due to inflation, in general.

In new vehicles in particular, the micro chip shortage is having a serious affect. It seems that auto manufacturers have everything they need but chips for the electronics in their vehicles.

How long will this continue?

Expect the shortage to linger until next year, at least. Most reports say the chip shortage will go on into 2022 and potentially longer than that. Congress has shown interest in moves that would increase domestic chip production, but its not exactly the kind of operation you get up and going overnight.

The country will likely be dependent on overseas chip production for a couple years, and even then it's unlikely that domestic production will match the capacity we’re used to.

However, there are signs of relief ahead. Used vehicle prices are still exorbitant, but prices seem to becoming down at least a little in recent months. It’s only a matter of time before the imbalance between demand and supply starts to tip back. Those desperate for cars will eventually find them, and auto manufacturers will keep trickling units onto the market as they get their hands on chips.

Still, we may never see again see the vehicle prices that we once considered normal, so its time tore think our position as consumers. Do you really need a new vehicle? A lot of auto sales are driven by the desire for luxury and convenience, rather than need.

Sources like this one say that a well-kept motor can be all but expected to run up to 200,000 miles. Newer vehicles are expected to run longer than older ones because engineering has improved over the decades. The added complexity of vehicles (like the addition of electronics) means there’s more complexity and more parts that can fail, but it also increases the life span of vehicles. In recent years, we’ve even seen it extend the life of warranties. Newer players in the auto market, like Hyundai and Kia, are offering a 60,000 mile basic warranty and 100,000 warranty on their drive trains. Nissan is also offering a 5 year, 100,000 mile warranty on select2021 models.

Warranty coverage is not the same as vehicle life expectancy, but the fact that warranties are getting longer is a good sign that newer cars are expected to run longer. Kia and Hyundai have used long warranties as a way to get a foothold in a competitive market and build credibility as a reliable brand. They’re testing the limits of the industry, and you can see that the strategy is working. Just look at the prominence of these brands on American roads in 2021.

This goes to show that it’s profitable for an auto manufacturer to sell cars with coverage up to 100,000miles. When parts fail, the manufacturer has to cover the cost. This is, essentially, them betting that their vehicles are reliable enough to not bankrupt them in maintenance costs.

How to maximize the life of your motor

1. Proper maintenance.

2. Know your car

. Be familiar with your car, so that you know when something’s amiss. Catching problems early is the key to preventing real damage.

3. Be kind to your car.

Obviously, if you have to drive over mountain passes or commute in traffic, there’s nothing you can do about it. We don’t want you to worry about what you’re putting your car through. We just want you to be conscientious about it.

THREE WAYS YOU CAN SAVE MONEY ON BRAKE MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS

Automobiles come with a high cost of ownership. There’s no way around it. So here are a few ways you can minimize that cost, when it comes to your brake system.

1. Don’t drive/brake aggressively

Stopping abruptly increases wear and tear on your brake components, and puts more strain on the system overall. Aggressive driving (tailgating, cornering at high speeds, accelerating quickly between stop lights) leads to excessive braking.

You don’t want to hold up the flow of traffic, especially in busy cities or on highways. This could be dangerous. But if the light’s red in front of you, and the intersection behind you is clear, there’s no point in zooming up to the light just so you can sit and wait. You might as well just coast up to and take it easy on your brakes.

Additionally, excessive heat on your brakes (like you get from driving too fast) increases wear and tear. It can also warp your rotors, which is another component you’ll then have to replace prematurely.

2. Regular service

If you wait too long too change your pads, you can damage your rotors. You shouldn’t need to change your rotors as often as you change your pads. Keep up on your pads, and change them as soon as they show indications of wear.

You’ll find the life of all your brake system components will be longer if you keep up on maintenance. Keep your fluid full, change it as needed, and have your brake lines bled regularly.

3. Buy the right parts

The cheapest parts are not always the cheapest parts in the long run, nor are the most expensive ones necessarily the longest lasting.

Check the warranty on any parts you buy yourself. BRAKE MAINTENANCE: ALL YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BRAKES

If your brakes fail, it could be fatal. At the least, you’ll be on the hook for some brake repairs and your car will be our of service for a few days.

Regular service is not only the best way to ensure your safety --- its the most cost-effective way to keep your brakes working.

To understand what, exactly, your brakes require from you to keep working properly, you need a brief overview of your braking system.

How the modern braking system works

The brake pedal is mounted on a lever. Your foot applies mechanical force to this lever, which is transferred to the brake booster. The brake booster transfers it to the brake master cylinder, which you can find underneath the brake fluid reservoir in the hood compartment.The master cylinder is located here, because it needs to draw fluid into the braking system and pressurize it. This sends pressure through your brake lines (which are hydraulic hoses designed for this specific purpose) to the calipers, which are at the wheel.

The calipers then squeeze together. This applies friction to the discs, slowing their rotation. The discs are fixed to the wheels, so that when the discs slow, so does the vehicle.

Wear and tear

As you might guess, this point of friction leads to wear over time. So inside the caliper and disc assembly, you have replaceable parts. The calipers have replaceable pads made of metal or ceramic that are designed to wear over time.

The discs, as well, will deal with some wear. However, with proper driving and maintenance, you won’t ever need to replace or repair your discs. The components you need to be aware of are:

Pads

Discs

All of these components could, theoretically, fail. However, a few of them (typically) require no maintenance at all. This includes the pedal assembly, brake booster, and master cylinder. As far as maintenance goes, here’s what you need to know about each component:

Brake fluid

The fluid is a hydraulic medium that transfers power to the calipers. To function properly, it needs to be kept fresh and at the proper fill level. Its important to use the right fluid (which is typically called out on the cap of your fluid reservoir), which has the desired physical properties.

Keep a bottle of fluid in your trunk, and check your brake fluid at regular intervals, such as when you fuel up. There should be a fill line marked on the side of the reservoir.

The fluid will get dirty over time, and need to be changed. You can go a local mechanic or tire and brake center to have your brake system flushed. There is probably a recommended interval for this specific service; you can see your owner’s manual or call your dealership to find out what it is.

Brake lines

All you really need to know about your brake lines is that they need to be bled, from time to time. They are susceptible to getting air bubbles inside the line, which can mess with the proper functioning of the hydraulic fluid.

Bleeding is a fairly quick and inexpensive service. We recommend doing it or having it done every couple years (when you replace brake pads is a good time).

Brake pads

The pads will wear out over time, and need to be replaced. There is a metal strip inside them, called a wear indicator. It will be exposed to friction with the disc when the pads wear thin and emit a squealing noise. Other signs that your brakes may be running low are a scraping noise, a funny feel to the pedal, or a reduced response when you apply the brakes.

Discs

The discs are, technically speaking, a consumable product. However, it takes excessive friction and or heat to wear them out.

Long and/or aggressive braking sessions --- like when you’re driving fast down a mountain and constantly braking, or hauling a heavy load and not giving yourself adequate time to slow down --- can heat up your brake assembly at the wheel.

This can put excessive wear on your pads, and the heat can warp your brake discs. To fix that problem, you’ll have to get them re-surfaced or replaced.

The other thing that can damage your discs is running your pads too long, to the point where metal on metal begins to wear them down and misshape them.

Two ways to save money on your braking system

The first way to save yourself some money is to keep up on maintenance. This will help you avoid the expensive repairs that come with component failure.

The other way is to be easy on your brakes while driving. If you don’t drive aggressively, follow too closely, or put yourself in situations where you have to stop suddenly, you won’t have to brake aggressively. Your pads and discs will last much longer, because 1) you’ll be doing much of your slowing down by coasting, and 2) when you do apply the brakes, they’ll need less pressure/friction to stop the vehicle.

For example, some drivers rush quickly to the next traffic light, even though it’s red. Why not coast gently up to it, and spend less time sitting motionless while you wait for the light to turn green?

Of course, in a busy city, it might be necessary to get quickly through an intersection so that the maximum number of cars can clear the intersection every light cycle. But you can still slow down gently.

HISTORY OF THE TRANSMISSION

The first commercially produced automotive transmissions were simple manual gearboxes. In the early days of motoring, cars were not affordable for everyone. Roads weren’t suited for the high speeds that we drive at today, so cars simply weren’t built to travel that fast. A standard gearbox had one reverse gear and 2 forward gears.

Like with modern manual gearboxes, the driver used a clutch pedal and shift lever to select gears. The clutch pedal disengages the motor input from the transmission, so that the gears are not forcibly turning as they mesh together. The shift lever, naturally, aligns the appropriate gear with the motor input.

The perceived problem with these transmissions, though, was that it was inconvenient to have to shift manually. Apparently, it also required a fair amount of force. This made shifting a distraction from the road, and made it unappealing for women to drive. But roads were growing across the country, and autos were becoming more affordable, so manufacturers wanted to mass produce cars that had greater appeal to the general populace --- particularly women.

In 1940, Oldsmobile rolled out the Hydra-matic, the first hydraulic automatic transmission. To workaround the need for a clutch plate, they had developed a fluid coupling. The connection between the motor input and the transmission was now liquid, rather than solid: an input turbine churned hydraulic fluid into an output turbine that operated the transmission. No direct contact of moving parts was needed any longer. The one drawback to this system is that transmitting power through a hydraulic medium results in a loss of power.

Shifting was also made easier with the integration of planetary gear assemblies. These systems keep all gears turning at the same time, so that all gears are in sync. Even better, different outputs can be achieved through various combinations of different gear ratios. Below is a 13-minute video explaining how it works.

Because multiple outputs can be achieved from one gear assembly, they offer more gear ratios from amore compact transmission. And more gear ratios was just what was needed to achieve the high speeds of modern vehicles.

The automatic transmission made its final leap to the finely tuned hydraulic machine that it is today in1947 when Buick introduced their Dynaflow transmission. This was the first commercially produced transmission that implemented a torque converter. A torque converter is a fluid coupling that actually multiplies the torque incoming from the motor input.

This is highly useful because it allows smaller gears to produce more torque. Thus, a transmission can be geared with smaller gear ratios, which allows for optimal operation at higher speeds. The torque converter became common in commercially produced vehicles, when competitors like the Packard Ultramatic and the Chevrolet Powerglide emerged shortly after the Dynaflow.

Of course, the manual gearbox was present throughout this time period as well, and is still today. The hydraulic automatic is the most popular transmission in the US, but manual transmissions have their place in the hearts of enthusiasts.

Variations on the hydraulic automatic and the traditional gearbox have emerged since, as well.

The manual has advanced in the form of the high performance Direct Clutch Transmission, which addresses the biggest performance problems with manual transmissions --- they take time to shift (learn how DCT’s fix that problem here ). The DCT made its way into a competitive racing model developed by Porsche in the1970’s. The VW Golf R32 was the first consumer car to implement it, in 2003. Bugatti, Nissan, Ferrari, Porsche and Mitsubishi have all followed suit in limited capacity.

Automatics now use sensors and electronics where they once relied on mechanics. These changes have allowed for advancements like the tiptronic transmission in modern sport and sport-economy cars. Its really not a different type of transmission; it just comes equipped with a few extra components that allow the driver to manually signal a gear shift in an automatic transmission. This option is becoming widely available.

Finally, there’s a third type of transmission that is, by definition, neither an automatic transmission or a manual. It doesn't require gear shifts at all, as it uses a belt and pulley system that can adjust gear ratios to keep the vehicle operating directly in the power band. Most major auto manufacturers have at least one or two models that implement a Constantly Variable Transmission.

TYPES OF TRANSMISSIONS

The point of a transmission is to improve fuel economy, improve acceleration and reduce engine wear. To do this, your transmission uses leverage to create different outputs from the motor input. Basically, there is an ideal range of RPM’s for your motor to operate in, which we’ll refer to as the powerband. Too low, and you don’t have enough power. Too high, and your engine will be loud, run too hot, and consume copious amounts of fuel.

Different transmissions have different ways of creating the ideal torque output for any given situation. Over the last century, mechanical geniuses have pushed the envelope, creating the various transmissions that are available today.

Manual gearbox

The first type of vehicle transmission to ever be produced commercially was, predictably, the simplest to understand. Manual gearboxes need the driver to select the appropriate gear range for their driving conditions. This is done with the use of a clutch pedal and shift lever. The clutch pedal disengages the motor input from the transmission. That way, the gears are not being forcibly rotated by the motor as they mesh together.

Manual transmissions offer great fuel economy. They’re also cheap and easy to maintain. They require clutch fluid, which is easily checked and topped off under the hood, and a drain-and-refill service at regular intervals.

The main reason they are less popular today is that they’re tiresome to drive in stop-and-go traffic, and people find manual shifting to be an inconvenience. However, they are better than automatics for fast acceleration. Automatics run to a higher range before shifting, since they rely on the build-up of pressure to shift. With a manual, the driver can shift earlier, thus keeping the vehicle operating in a tighter and more efficient powerband.

Dual clutch transmission

The biggest drawback to traditional manuals are that they take time to shift. A DCT solves this by putting two different transmissions in one housing. One clutch operates the even numbered gears, and one operates the odd numbered gears. The two clutches are synchronized, so that when one releases, the other engages. The appropriate gear is already selected, and no interruption of power to the wheels needs to occur.

DCT’s are designed for use in performance cars. Their major drawback is that they’re jerky and uncomfortable to drive in in traffic or at low speeds in general. Some DCT’s require no fluid at all, so they’re largely maintenance-free over their (admittedly short) lifetime. Others do use fluid, and the required transmission maintenance is the same as traditional manuals.

Hydraulic automatic transmission

This is the modern automatic transmission that is in widespread use today. It lags behind the rest in fuel economy and performance, but has won out for its convenience. Safety is supposed to be another benefit, as the driver has to pay less attention operating and can pay more attention to the road.

However, this is not necessarily the reality, since automatic transmissions just make it easier for irresponsible drivers to turn their attention toward things like using their cell phone as they drive. The modern automatic is a hydraulic machine. Everything within the transmission functions on hydraulic pressure. The maintenance required is slightly more than most other transmissions. There’s typically more fluid needed. Additionally, there’s a filter that needs to be changed regularly in most models. The transmission is particularly sensitive to dirty or low fluid; the fluid is, after all, a hydraulic medium in a finely tuned hydraulic machine. Automated Manual Transmission

These transmissions are your conventional manual gearbox with a few added components to handle the shifting procedure. The driver has the advantage of being able to select the appropriate gear range, but doesn’t have to operate the clutch pedal. If the driver chooses not to select gears manually, the car will still shift gears on its own.

Tiptronic AKA manumatic

On the surface, these transmissions function exactly the same as the aforementioned AMT. The driver is allowed to select gears manually, but the car will shift by itself once the pressure builds. The Tiptronic transmission is found in many modern sport and economy-sport cars.

The key difference between the Tiptronic and the AMT is that a Tiptronic is truly an automatichydraulic transmission, and it uses sensors and computers to signal a manual gear selection from the driver. You can expect your maintenance to be the same as with an ordinary automatic. The upside, however, is that you have manual gear selection for swift acceleration when you want it.

CVT (Continuously variable transmission)

The CVT is as automatic as it gets; it uses a pulley and belt system that can create a gear of any size by expanding the pulley. That means that the car never needs to shift, and there are no gear ranges. With all other types of transmission, you have gears that are meant to keep the vehicle operating within the power band. But the real sweet spot is somewhere in the middle of the powerband, so in a transmission with gears, the car is typically operating above or below the ideal RPM. Not so with a CVT; its always right in the sweet spot.

The advantages of the CVT are fuel economy and ideal output for performance at all times. However, it has torque limitations, because belts tend to slip under extreme torque. This can be mitigated by using a chain instead of a pulley, but it doesn’t eliminate the problem. The stress is too much even for a chain in high-torque applications, like diesel trucks.

The maintenance for CVT’s is basically the same as for your conventional hydraulic automatic transmission. You mainly need to check the fluid regularly, keep it topped off, and change the fluid at regular service intervals or when it gets dirty.

HOW DOES AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION KNOW WHEN TO SHIFT?

Let’s take a second to pay homage to the 20thcentury geniuses that designed the automatic transmission, because its next-level stuff. In principle, the way they work is actually quite simple ---once its been explained. So for this article, we’ll stick to that, and not worry your head (our ours) with the complex details.

So how does an automatic transmission know when to shift, especially when it often needs to shift at different RPMs? While its true that modern vehicles use sensors for most of the of work, the automatic transmission has been around since the 1940’s. Until the use of onboard computers late in the 20thcentury, shifting was controlled mechanically. And even when computers and sensors are used, the things they monitor are still the same. Here’s how it works

Mechanical magic

The first thing to understand is that the automatic transmission is actually a hydraulic machine. That means its inner workings are driven by hydraulic pressure.

Let’s start with actually happens when your transmission shifts. The gears are engaged or disengaged via clutch packs. These are stacks of friction plates that form a connection when they are squeezed together, and end that connection when they spread back apart. They are regulated by valves, called shift valves, that move in response to pressure.

The pressure, of course, is a response to the two things that matter most when timing a shift of gears --- engine output and vehicle speed . These two factors each generate pressure on one side of the shift valve, so that valve moves according to the demands being placed on the vehicle, and thus activates the right clutch packs, which activates the appropriate gear.The way that engine output is typically signaled to the valve is by use of a vacuum modulator, which responds to pressure in the intake manifold. As you throttle up, more air rushes into the manifold and increases pressure.

On the other end, vehicle speed is monitored by a component called a governor. The governor is inside the transmission housing, attached to the output shaft, which means it turns along with the drive train. So as the wheels turn, so does the governor, and its input signals the shift valve to shift or delay a shift at a certain RPM.

That’s why your car takes longer to upshift when you’re driving uphill or accelerating aggressively. The engine is being tasked with more work, and to do this work, torque is needed. The lower (larger)gears provide more leverage. Once enough momentum is gained, a smaller gear can be used, which runs the output shaft faster.

The final piece of the puzzle is throttle position . When you accelerate aggressively, the car needs to stay in each gear longer before upshifting. Your desire to reach speed sooner is communicated to the transmission by how wide you open the throttle, AKA how far you push the gas pedal. Throttle position is linked to internal components in the transmission with cable linkage or other means like sensors.

All you really need to know about your transmission

The most important thing for vehicle owners to take away from all this is that the fluid in your automatic transmission is a hydraulic medium. If the fill level is low or the fluid quality is bad, the transmission will not function properly. This may or may not be something you notice, but your transmission definitely will notice. It will increase wear and tear on your transmission, which is one of the few components in your car that can cost 5k or more to replace.

What your transmission does for you, and what you can do for it

As a vehicle owner and non-mechanic, you don’t need to everything about how a transmission works. All you really need to know is what it does, so you understand two things:

The kind of maintenance it needs, and
Just how important that maintenance is

The transmission, simplified

The combustion engine comes with some of its own limitations. Combustion drives the pistons up and down, creating torque in the form of RPM’s. This output is what turns the drivetrain, which turns the wheels. The problem is that there is an ideal range of RPM’s the engine needs to operate in, to keep fuel efficiency up and engine wear down.

Gearing can solve this problem. Gears can be thought of as radial levers. Large gears increase leverage, which increases the output of the motor. This means the motor can do more work, within the same operating range of RPMs.

However, a larger gear turns slower. For every revolution produced by the motor, a larger gear is transmitting less than one to the drivetrain, meaning the car can’t move as fast. The extra leverage is needed to overcome inertia when accelerating, or to fight gravity when driving up a hill. But this leverage becomes expendable as the vehicle picks up speed. Switching to a smaller gear allows the drivetrain to turn faster. A typical configuration will have 4thgear actually be the “base” gear in the gear ratio. In this configuration, 5th gear is smaller than 4thand is your cruising gear. Its the only gear that transmits more revolutions to the wheels than the motor produces. This meant for maintaining freeway speed and/or gradual acceleration/

All you really need to know

The principle is the same in both manual transmissions (MT) and typical automatic transmissions (AT),although there are exceptions to this like the CVT. Besides your gears, there are a few other components to be aware of:

Clutch

Changing from one gear to another would cause grinding of the gears and a violent jerk as the gears finally sync up. To gradually ease into the process, transmissions use clutch plates to engage and disengage gears. The plates press together to form a connection. But understanding this isn’t really that important.

What is important is knowing that in cars with MT’s, the manually operated clutch is a separate component that needs its own maintenance. The clutch needs a specific amount of fluid to function right. The reservoir for this can be found under the hood, and a fill level will be marked on it.

Transmission Fluid

With AT’s, the clutch packs are inside the transmission, so you don’t need to worry about a separate fluid. However, the importance of transmission fluid cannot be overstated. In a MT, the fluid acts as a lubricant to reduce heat and friction. It needs to be checked regularly for fill level and for quality. Overtime, metal shavings and grease will contaminate the fluid, and the gearbox will need to be drained and refilled to remove impurities.

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) has a dual function. Its a lubricant, as well as a hydraulic medium. Low fill and dirty ATF can affect performance of the transmission. Just ask any heavy equipment mechanic if the quality and amount of hydraulic fluid is important in a hydraulic system. The point is, your AT is a finely tuned hydraulic machine, and it does everything via precise hydraulic pressure, from transmitting and amplifying torque to changing gears.

Because the quality of your ATF is so important, AT’s often come with a disposable filter to clean the fluid. So to summarize, to protect your transmission and ensure optimal operation, you need to do the following:

Manual

Check the fill level of the clutch fluid regularly
Check the fluid level/quality of the manual gearbox regularly (access is usually underneath)
Drain, refill and flush the manual gearbox as needed

Automatic

Check the level/quality of the ATF regularly
Drain, refill and flush ATF as needed

All vehicles have specific service intervals called out by the manufacturer. If you can’t find this info, you can call a dealership. Beyond that, you should be checking your fluid regularly. We’d recommend as often as you fuel up. Getting underneath the car to check the manual gearbox can be an inconvenience, but its the responsible thing to do. In almost all vehicles, the ATF dipstick can be accessed under the hood, making it a quick and easy check. Just make sure the vehicle is running when you check the fill level ( for automatic transmissions only )

You may find that your fluid gets dirty before the service interval comes up. Manual fluid will be a transparent amber color, and ATF a transparent pink. Dirty fluid can affect performance and increase wear. Keep that in mind when weighing the decision to push your luck with dirty fluid. The longer you run dirty fluid, the dirtier it gets. Additionally, contaminants can build up in the fluid. This will make flushing necessary, as sludge can stick inside when you drain the fluid, and immediately contaminate the new fluid when you refill.

PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE FOR WINTER

Despite the fact that winter continues to come at the end of every year, its easy to overlook preparing for it. The cold weather brings dangerous road conditions and reduced visibility. Here are some things to check up on now --- before you find yourself in immediate need in the dead of winter.

1. Test your heat.

Just make sure its working. Test your seat warmers, too. If you haven’t used the heat for several months, there’s a chance something might have gone wrong. You’ll need your heat to defrost your windows, and to be comfortable driving in the middle of winter.

Crank it up to max and make sure its putting out the right amount; even a small drop in the coolant level in your radiator can make the heat blow lukewarm or cold.

2. Check the quality of your antifreeze.

Your antifreeze will eventually expire. When that happens, it can lose its antifreeze properties. Your coolant ought to be changed at regular intervals, anyways. For more on radiator and cooling system maintenance, see here .

3. Check the tread on your tires.

You’ll need adequate tread to navigate wet and potentially icy roads this winter. A common technique for checking tire tread is to insert a quarter, upside down, into your tread. If the top of Mr. Washington’s bald dome is showing, your tread is too low.

4. Make sure you have freeze resistant windshield wiper fluid in your reservoir.

If it freezes, you won’t be able to use it. While you’re at it, you could get some that has Rain-X or a similar product in it, to imbue your windshield with the rain-repellent properties every time you use your windshield washer.

5. Inspect your wiper blades and/or apply a coat of Rain-X.

If your wipers smear water across your windshield, rather than wicking it, you could be in trouble.

6. Check all your lights to make sure they’re working.

You need to be able to see where you’re going, and other drivers need to be able to see you. While you’re at it, you can clean your headlights to help them cast more light. If the lenses are discolored, dull or foggy, you can pick up a cleaning kit at your local parts store that will make them crystal clear again.

7. Finally, make sure you have an emergency kit in your car.

Be prepared for situations like sliding off an icy road and getting stuck in a ditch in 15 degree weather with kids in the car. Stash some items like blankets, flashlights and food.

In this post, we’ll address four questions for drivers who are less familiar with vehicle maintenance:

1. What kind of maintenance does my cooling system need?

Your coolant fill level needs to be kept up, or your vehicle is at risk of overheating. Check the level at regular intervals (say, once a month, when you’re refueling). Only do this when the vehicle is cold , as hot coolant is under pressure and can spray from the radiator, causing burns. Remove the cap from the radiator. Add coolant as needed to bring the level up to the bottom of the filler neck.

A big concern with your radiator is that the coolant inside it can expire or potentially gum up if neglected. If coolant can’t circulate as intended, your vehicle will overheat, and this can cause engine components to warp or crack. There are multiple reasons the coolant can gum up (gunk build up overtime from corrosion, mixing different types of coolants, other fluids leaking into the system, etc). The best way to prevent this is too keep your coolant fresh. This involves changing the coolant at regular intervals. This will also prevent the coolant from going bad, which leads to acid buildup, as well as less resistance to boiling and freezing.

To clean out impurities, cooling systems sometimes need to be flushed. There are three common methods for this. One involves draining the coolant and then, with the system still open, circulating water through until it comes out clean. Another method involves draining the system, refilling it with water and flushing solution, running the vehicle for a set amount of time, and draining and refilling with new coolant. The other method requires a machine, which only a mechanic or service shop is likely to have.

2. How often is service needed?

Refer to your owner’s manual or service manual for manufacturer’s recommendations for service intervals. If you can’t find the answer there, you can always call a dealership. Every 100,000 miles is a common recommended interval.

You may need it more often, judging by the quality of the coolant in your radiator. Some people also push it past the intervals if they estimate that their coolant is still in good condition. We can’t recommend this in good conscience, though, as its always safest to go with the manufacturer's recommendations.

3. What goes into cooling system maintenance IE what am I actually getting for my money?

A drain and refill is fairly simple. Most vehicles have two drain plugs for coolant. The thermostat is also removed, as there can be coolant trapped behind it. The old coolant is captured and disposed of. The system is flushed by the chosen method. The thermostat and drain plugs are re-installed and coolant is added. In some vehicles, there is a precise bleeding process that needs to be followed to prevent air bubbles from getting trapped in the system, which can cause overheating.

The same thing is accomplished with a coolant flushing machine, but nothing needs to be removed except one end of hose or two. Its easier, cleaner, and faster.

4. Can I do the maintenance myself?

Yes, you can, but that doesn’t mean you should. Before you undertake the project, you’ll want to weigh the pros and cons of doing so. Its not a terribly expensive service to have done, and it can be messy todo yourself. Additionally, you’ll need a few basic tools (wrenches, drain pan, pliers, jack stands, etc),and some coolant. You’ll need to know where your drain plugs and thermostat are. And you’ll need to set a few hours aside, just in case it doesn’t go as planned. Your vehicle will be inoperable until you refill the coolant and bleed the system. Bleeding the system can be a tricky process, so you’ll need to research how to do it for your specific year/make/model before your begin. Finally, you’ll need to know how and where to store and dispose of the coolant safely.

Besides the occasional, almost inevitable failure of components like fans, thermostats, and water pumps, your cooling system should last the life of your car --- if you keep up on maintenance. Keep an eye on the fill level of your coolant, and be sure to check the coolant itself for rust flakes or other specks. Other than that, an inexpensive coolant change and/or flush every 100,000 miles or is a small price to pay to keep your vehicles operating at its best.

Why is my car overheating?

If your car is overheating, the first thing you need to know is to pull over immediately, the very second it is safe to do so, since overheating can cause permanent damage to the engine. The next thing you need to know is how the cooling system works. A brief overview will help you understand what you can diagnose on your own, and what you will need the help of a professional for.

How the cooling system works

The combustion of the motor creates heat, obviously. The engine runs optimally at what is known as operating temperature, and the cooling system is supposed to help it stay right at that temp. As the temp climbs past this point, you’ll get coolant bubbling out of the system, steam/smoke, and, eventually, warped or cracked engine components.

To keep all this from happening, the cooling system circulates coolant. This coolant heats up when it comes in contact with the heat radiating from the motor. As it flows away, its draws heat with it, to be released into the atmosphere through the radiator.

Any of the various components of the cooling system can cause overheating if they fail or under-perform. Let’s take a look at the role of each piece, and what can happen if it fails:

Coolant

The cooling fluid itself could be low, hampering the system’s ability to transfer enough heat to the radiator. But just because its low, doesn’t mean that this is the culprit. It might only be low because the vehicle overheated, causing coolant to bubble and steam its way out.

Coolant can also turn into a sludge like substance that doesn’t have the viscosity to circulate as needed. This due to long term lack of maintenance and/or mixing different types of coolants.

Hoses

The many hoses that circulate coolant throughout the engine compartment can leak, leading to low coolant. They can also be blocked by rust deposits, though this is unlikely if your cooling system is maintained.

Water Pump

The pump is what makes the coolant circulate, once the vehicle reaches operating temp. If the pump fails, the coolant won’t circulate.

Thermostat

This is a mechanical valve that opens to allow the circulation of coolant, and closes again when the engine cools. This occurs automatically when the thermostat is exposed to coolant at a certain temp. The main reason it is needed is to help the car reach operating temp faster by remaining closed --- and to keep it from running too cool by cutting off circulation as needed. If the thermostat fails and is stuck in the closed position, you’ll overheat.

Radiator

The coolant flows through the radiator, which is right behind the grill, where it is subject to cool airflow as the car moves forward. The many fins on the radiator allow air to pass through, and provide extra surface area for the heat to dissipate.

The fins themselves can be damaged by the impact of debris when you’re driving at high speeds, or if you were in a collision. Also, if debris or dirt are clogging the fins, the radiator can under-perform due to lack of air flow.

Cooling fan

Mounted to the radiator is a fan or pair of fans to assist with cooling. They’re supposed to kick on and force air flow through the radiator when you’re driving at low speeds or running the motor at a standstill. The fan itself can fail, or the relay that sends the electric signal to the fan can fail.

Basic diagnostics

Safety precautions: First, the fan blades can start at anytime if the vehicle accessories are on. The best policy is to keep your fingers clear of the blades, always. Second, the coolant is hot enough to burn you when it warms up. Its hot enough to make the cooling system hoses burn you if you touch them carelessly, and it stay hot for 30 minutes to an hour after your turn the vehicle off --- maybe longer, if you overheated. Its also under pressure, so do not remove the radiator cap until it is cool.

As you may have realized, there are three main causes for overheating: 1) there is not enough coolant to do the job, 2) the coolant is circulating but not getting cooled enough (probably the fan or radiator not working), or 3) the coolant is not circulating (thermostat or water pump). It is important to note that #3 can be caused by an air bubble trapped inside the cooling system . The system is sealed, and there is nowhere for air to escape. If you recently had to add a lot of coolant (say, if you had the cooling system open for repairs/service and lost some coolant), or changed the coolant, this could very well be your problem.

If you have determined that the problem is not sludge or leaking hoses, you can top the radiator off and start the vehicle. Turn the heat on to open the heater core. Let it run a minute. If the level drops, add more coolant. Repeat this until the level remains consistent and install the cap (to be absolutely sure the coolant level is full, check it again after the vehicle has been shut off and cooled down).

As the car reaches operating temp, the coolant should begin to circulate. All of the cooling system hoses should get hot, including the lower ones. The easy component to diagnose is the fan; if it doesn’t kick on while the vehicle idles and begins to overheat, its not doing its job and needs to be tested, along with its relays. If the fan is responsive, check the hoses for heat.

If the lower ones are noticeably cooler than the upper ones, and stay that way as the temp climbs above operating temp, your coolant isn’t circulating. This could be due to any of the three causes mentioned above. If you suspect it is an air pocket, look up the cooling system bleeding procedure for your specific year, make and model. This is important. Although most bleeding procedures are universal and simple, some vehicles have a very specific process that must be followed. You can have everything right, and err only slightly from the bleeding process, and you’ll still overheat. Ask me how I know. Or just trust me on this one, before you start ripping out components and replacing them only to find you’re still screwed.

Comparing Alternative Fuels: EV vs Propane vs Gas vs Diesel

These comparisons are meant to illustrate the cost effectiveness of each fuel for the consumer, and to weigh it against its environmental impact. The end result will help you decide which of the two most widely available alternative fuels (battery and LPG) is right for you.

Diesel and gas are included -- gas, because we need something to compare to, and it is the standard automotive fuel, and diesel, because it is somewhat standard for commercial use, especially when it comes to hauling heavy loads.

Energy density

These numbers vary only slightly according to different sources. With that in mind, these numbers can serve as good benchmarks. The difference between diesel, gas and propane is small. The energy density of current EV (electric vehicle batteries) is much, much smaller -- about 1/100th that of fuel. Figures are given as megaJoules per kilowatt.

LPG: 50.2
Gas: 46.5
Diesel: 45.8
Battery: 0.3

Yes, you read that right… 0.3. But there is much more to the story.

Energy efficiency

This refers to how to “accessible” the energy in a given fuel is for the current automotive technology. We felt compelled to include it so that the density of a fuel can be weighed against its efficiency. Again, sources vary slightly on these numbers. Additionally, the numbers are less concrete. They’re given in ranges, because they vary based on individual vehicles and the application, among other factors.

Battery: 69% to 90%
Diesel: 30% to 41%
Gas: 16% to 30%
LPG: No cited figures were found, but research indicates that you can expect a decrease in efficiency when converting to LPG from gas. Whether the superior energy density of LPG compensates can’t be quantified without more exact numbers.

So here, EV’s gain some ground. But at 1/100th of the density of gas, and roughly double the efficiency ( according to the Department of Energy ), battery power is still only about 1/50th as viable as gas. That means EV’s need a massive battery pack. The current models have a battery pack that basically covers the whole car, resting underneath the body on the chassis. This means extra weight to make up for -- and large production costs.

It's worth noting that recent improvements to gasoline engines are making gas a more efficient fuel.

Cost of refueling

This is the factor the consumer really cares about, of course.

Battery: 26% of gas. One source cited a 74% reduction to the cost of refueling with gas. This is, of course, measured by the increase on your electric bill if you drive the same number of miles over a given period as you would with a gas car.
LPG: 50-70% of gas. As LPG is a by product of crude oil production, the cost relationship is fairly consistent. The reduction in refueling costs varies by location and according to other factors, but you can expect it to be cheaper than gas --- enough to compensate for the reduced efficiency of LPG, and still offer substantial savings to the consumer.
Gas: Gas is the standard fuel whose price we are so familiar with, and thus is used as the baseline.
Diesel: the cost of diesel is typically slightly higher than that of gas.

Other cost factors to consider

First off, the costs of acquiring a vehicle are higher than gas for every other fuel. Electric vehicles are still ridiculously expensive to buy, even after substantial incentives offered by the government. Of course, the savings on refueling also subsidize the purchase. But there’s a lot of ground to make up for.

Propane-powered vehicles are the cheapest to acquire, next to gas. A gas powered vehicle is converted quite easily, which involves adding new fuel storage and a new fuel delivery system. There’s less cost to make up for than with diesel or electric.

Diesels are more expensive than gas vehicles to purchase and to maintain. The main reason diesel is a competitive fuel is because of the incredible torque advantages it offers. For loads of a certain weight, diesel is your only option (though electric semi trucks are in development). In terms of MPG, diesel is going to perform better than gas or propane. And the heavier the load, the more fuel efficient diesel becomes by comparison, because of its torque advantages.

Practicality & convenience

Before casting your lot, consider how realistic an electric vehicle or propane vehicle is for your specific situation. They both offer limited infrastructure as far as refueling goes. Long distance trips take more planning, and, frankly, are just out of the picture in some cases. An additional mark against the practicality of EV’s is the time it takes to recharge. However, if you can work it into your schedule, its not a problem.

It is a problem if you need a vehicle for all-day commercial use, though. A sitting vehicle is offering zero return-on-investment, which is why we like propane so much more for commercial use. To make propane work even better for commercial applications, you can set up a private refueling infrastructure.

This can actually be an advantage over gasoline. If your vehicles are going off route to get gas, that’s time and money spent on refueling. But if you can setup private refueling stations along your route(s), you can reduce those costs.

Environmental impact

Impact is a nuanced and charged topic. Everybody who writes about electric vehicles seems to feel that they have a dog in that fight. But there are always going to be more factors to consider, thus there is no final word. Our disclaimer is that we don’t hope to resolve the debate on what the friendliest fuel is.

The only thing we can say for certain is that cars, period, have a carbon footprint. There is one simple reason for this: the grid is powered by fossil fuels. Even when you’re charging your electric vehicle, you’re consuming fossil fuels. Sure, there are other fuels being used to power the grid. And that’s an argument for EV’s -- that it potentially uses less fossil fuels.

But the production of all vehicles requires fossil fuels, for transport of parts and materials, for power used in production, and for distribution, among other things. And the production of lithium ion batteries has its own unique set of environmental costs. (A Google search returns a wealth articles detailing this, like this one ). An argument against EV’s is that the environmental cost in production per unit is actually higher. The common rebuttal to this argument is that this cost is more than paid in the decreased post-production impact. Either way, its reasonable to have some skepticism about how well quantified the impact of battery production is.

The point is, cars are not kind to the atmosphere, according to modern conventional wisdom about the environment. The goal in choosing your fuel is to minimize your impact. And LPG and battery power both offer some decreases in certain ways.

EV’s run off a grid that is powered by more than just coal, natural gas and oil. Hydro, nuclear, solar and wind all contribute. Additionally, EV’s don’t require that their “fuel” is transported all over the country to convenient locations. Where there’s electricity, there’s “fuel.”

LPG, meanwhile, is a by-product of crude production. So converting to propane reduces the demand for more wellhead locations. Propane needs to be transported still, but with your own private infrastructure, you can reduce the amount of driving done for refueling purposes. Another advantage to propane is that it burns cleaner than gas or diesel. So in the interest of reducing environmental costs, its a viable alternative.

Which is right for you?

If you can afford the upfront costs for an EV, you’ll see substantial savings on refueling. This makes them viable for private use. But with the current tech, EV’s are less practical for commercial use. The downtime needed for charging is costly, and the available models are limited, currently. LPG is a more practical alternative fuel for fleets. That’s why transport vehicles like shuttles servicing Sea-Tac Airport are using it. The cost of converting an already existing fleet is much lower than the cost of acquiring EV’s. And there are still savings. For the time being, we recommend LPG as your best alternative fuel.

5 Signs You Need To Service Your Brakes

1. Squeaking or squealing coming from brakes and when stopping

When your brake pads are near the end of their life cycle, they will start making a squeaking noise. This noise is usually caused by a built in wear indicator that is specifically designed to make a squeaking noise when your brake pads are due for service. One way to verify this is to take a look at your brake pad thickness from the brake rotor to the edge of the pad. The minimum brake pad thickness for most brakes is 6 to 3mm.

3. Vibration In The Brake Pedal While Stopping

Another sign of a metal on metal condition in your vehicle’s brake system is a vibration in the brake pedal when stopping. This vibration is caused by the metal from the brake pad grinding on your brake system’s metal rotor. This occurs when your brake pad has worn away completely and your brakes must be replaced. When your brake system is in the metal to metal condition, your vehicle is no longer safe to drive. Excessive grinding in the brakes could cause complete brake failure or a fire. If your brake pedal is vibrating when you are braking, it's a sign that you need to service your brakes.

4. Pulsation in the Steering Wheel When Braking

If your steering wheel or brake pedal begin to pulsate, its a sign that you need to repair your brakes. The pulsation occurs when the rotors on your vehicle begin to warp and no longer produce a flat even braking surface for the brake pad. Pulsating brake rotors commonly occur when your brake pads are replaced and the rotors are either not resurfaced or not replaced. Another common cause of warped rotors is installing poor quality rotors as well as excessive heating and immediate cooling. This excessive heating can be caused by using your brakes constantly while driving in hilly terrain. The hot rotors are then quickly cooled while driving through wet terrain. This cause is less common but does occur. If your brake rotors are begging to warp you will feel the pulsation starting at braking from higher speeds such as while taking the off ramp on the freeway. When you feel pulsation in your brake pedal and steering wheel, It is a sign that it’s time to service your brake system.

5. Delayed Or Longer Than Usual Stop

If your brakes are not working like they used to and you notice that your car is taking longer to stop, it’s time to service your brakes. Delayed or longer stop is usually caused by poor quality brake fluid or air inside your brake system. Brake fluid allows the power from your foot to transfer directly to the brake calipers allowing for immediate engagement of the brakes when you need them. Overtime water will condensate in the brake fluid and naturally your brake power will reduce. Air entering the brake fluid system will also create loss of braking power. To prevent this potentially hazardous condition from occurring it is important to properly service your brake system per your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. Brake fluid should be changed every 20,000 to 40,000 miles or every 2 years. If you notice a delay or longer than usually braking time, it’s a sign you need to service your brakes.

How Propane Conversions Work

The conversion to propane is less of big deal than you might think. The engine itself will run almost exactly the same and doesn’t need to be modified. The main change is the fuel delivery system, which brings fuel from the storage tank into the combustion chamber.

The combustion chamber is where the force that runs the wheels is generated. Revolutions are created by the reciprocating (back-and-forth) motion of the motor’s pistons. This motion is powered by the carefully timed series of explosions that is your fuel igniting under heat and pressure.

These explosions are controlled by the injection system, which carefully meters the amount of fuel being injected into the combustion chamber. An explosion that generates a precise amount of force results from the fuel being vaporized as it is injected.

Converting to a propane-powered engine

The conversion requires a new fuel tank, new fuel delivery lines, new fuel rails and injectors, and a computer designed to regulate the air-to-fuel ratio for optimal combustion. None of the other existing components, like motor, transmission or ignition system need to be modified. Your motor should run almost exactly the same.

Impact on MPGs and fuel costs

The combustion properties of propane and gas are similar. If anything, propane is actually a higher octane than fuel (104 to 110 compared to an octane of 87 to 92 with gas). Your MPG will probably be a bit lower with propane. This small loss ( expect about 10%) is more than made up for by the greatly reduced cost of fuel along with other benefits.

Propane burns cleaner than gas

Propane burns cleaner. Not only does this reduce environmental impact through less emissions, it means less wear-and-tear on your vehicle. Your maintenance schedule will have to be modified. It’s difficult to quantify any specific savings on maintenance costs, but a cleaner burning fuel means less residual buildup in your motor which theoretically leads to longer life for fluids and components. And this is all minor compared to the cost savings (propane runs about 30-50% the cost of fuel) on the fuel itself.

Propane is a fossil fuel from a group of fuels known as LP gas, or liquid petroleum. Propane is a by-product of petroleum and natural gas processing which takes the form of a gas under normal environmental conditions. For storage and transportation, it is compressed into liquid form.

Most people are familiar with it as a fuel for gas grills, RV appliances and forklifts. But propane offers huge upside as an alternative fuel for vehicles, especially for commercial fleets. If that makes you wonder why its not used more commonly, realize that its low demand is part of what makes it more cost-effective.

Savings

As propane is a by-product of natural gas and crude, the price has a direct relation to the price of fuel. Propane usually hovers between 50-70% of the price of fuel (this could theoretically change if demand were to increase, but it will still be cheaper than gas). On top of a significant reduction in environmental impact, it affects your bottom line in a handful of ways. There’s an upfront investment needed to switch to propane, but it pays itself off -- and quickly -- for commercial vehicles. That expense is what keeps demand for propane low. Why not take advantage and run your vehicle strictly off propane?

The fuel is cheaper. You’ll spend less money on maintenance and repairs, because propane burns cleaner, leaving less residue in your motor. There’s also a logistical advantage: you can store large amounts of propane. This means you can refuel at a strategic location of your choice. No time and fuel need to be wasted on trips to refuel your fleet vehicles. And when the chips fall in your favor, you can buy large amounts of propane when prices are low for further savings. These savings add up fast for commercial fleets with vehicles that run all day. Propane power is an edge that every fleet can take advantage of.

Environmental impact

Propane is a by-product of oil, so in using propane, we’re doing our part to reduce demand. Reducing demand means less oil has to be drilled for, refined, and transported. All of these processes leave a carbon footprint. There’s arguably an advantage over electric vehicles, too. Much of the grid is still powered by fossil fuels, roughly 63% in 2019, according to the Energy Information Administration. So when you charge your Tesla, you’re technically consuming crude anyways.

Additionally, propane itself burns cleaner than gas and diesel. You not only reduce demand, you reduce your carbon footprint by emissions.

How to test drive a used vehicle

All of the things we recommend looking for, below, are important for three reasons:

They may indicate a condition that needs work, thereby increasing the cost of ownership, and this might impact the price you’re willing to pay
They help to paint an overall picture of the way the car has been treated and maintained
They help to assess the reliability of what the seller tells you about the car. Does their story match up with what you can observe on your own

When you schedule your test drive, request that they don’t start the vehicle for an hour before you get there. Some used vehicles start with a much more reassuring sound and feel when they’re warmed up.Sellers might “get it out of the garage for ya” just before you get there, as a “courtesy”. You’ll learn more about the vehicle if you specifically ask them to leave the engine cold.

Be sure to take the vehicle on both city streets and the freeway. Some conditions/symptoms are only evident at certain speeds.

What to look for

You’ll want to try out all the electronics/accessories. Test the windows, locks, interior lights, exterior lights, and radio. Listen to the sounds the AC and heat make, and feel the air to make sure it blows hot and cold as expected. Test the AC/heat with the windows up to see if there are any strange smells coming from the air system.

Once you try out the accessories, cut out all the noise so you can listen to other things. Turn off the AC/heat/air, turn off the radio, and keep the idle chit chat out. While driving, make any talk is about the car and getting the info you need to make a good decision. Try listening to the sound of the vehicle with the windows both up and down. Listen for knocks, rattles, coughs, and clicks.

How smoothly does the vehicle drive? It should respond well to the gas pedal, shift without over-revving or jerking, and have little to no play in the steering wheel.

Find a quiet cul-de-sac or parking lot, and drive slowly in circles with the windows down, to test for clicks or knocks coming from the CV joints (for AWD and front wheel drive vehicle).

Let the vehicle idle next to a large wall. The sounds it makes will be magnified, which might make some more subtle noises audible.

Test the brakes for responsiveness while driving. Be safe: make sure there is not another vehicle tailing you when you do this, and don’t slam the pedal so hard you lock up the wheels and go into a skid.

Test the alignment while driving by hovering your hand just above the steering wheel to see if the vehicle has a tendency to drift without being held straight. Also do this while gently braking. The car should hold straight or pull slightly to the right. Be safe: Do this on a straight, level road. Be alert to whats around you and in front of you, and hold your hand ready to instantly grip the wheel.

Don’t let excitement about a deal, or impatience, jade your perspective. Its easy to get invested when you spend time inspecting another vehicle, mainly because you’s prefer this one to be the one, rather than the next one.

Inspecting a used vehicle checklist

When inspecting a used vehicle, take your time. Expect the evaluation of each vehicle to take 1-2 hours, at least, and accept that you might have to go through it with multiple vehicles before you find the right deal. If you’re in a hurry to get through it, you could very well miss out on a something important. Make sure you schedule enough time when you set up the appointment, and don’t let the seller rush you by talking about needing to make an appointment. Simply schedule a time window IE 6pm to 7pm, rather than just a start time.

Check the warranty (if the vehicle is still under warranty) and read the fine print.

Inspect in broad daylight whenever possible. Even the brightest parking lot lights might hide defects in the paint and body, and might make the car look much shinier than it is.

Request a report on the vehicle’s history from CARFAX. Dealerships may offer these as a courtesy to their customers. For a privately sold vehicle, you’ll have to dig it up yourself, unless the seller has to taken it upon themselves to get one. Go to carfax.com to get started.

Inspection Checklist

All of the items below add up to give you, as the buyer, a rough idea of how well the car has been maintained, how hard it has been driven. Hopefully, all of the deductions you’re able to make line up with the story the seller is telling you about the car.

Body: Does the paint match on all panels? If not, it indicates that something has been replaced, which indicates the body was damaged. You can bring a small magnet, too; the magnet will not stick to body filler, so you can test suspicious areas to see if they have been filled in and painted over.

Exterior Lights Check: All of the exterior lights: front and back turn signals, low beams, high beams, running lights, brake lights. If you don’t have a friend with you, you can ask the seller to operate the lights while you stand outside and check them.

Suspension: Yank the top of each tire. Suspension in good shape will allow for zero clicks and zero play. Bounce each corner of the car. Good suspension will only bounce once and come to a rest. Bad suspension will eventually need to be replaced, and should be factored into your decision to buy.

Tires: Wear should be fairly even across the tire, and look similar on all four tires. More wear on the outside indicates aggressive driving, which lends some insight into how hard the car has been driven.

Interior: Check for odor. Check for stains, wear and tear in the carpet, seats and headliner. Check all electronics:radio, AC, heat, interior lights, seat adjustment controls, windows, and locks.

Hood Compartment: Check the fill level of all the fluids: transmission (transmission fill level should be checked with the motor idling), motor oil, power steering, brake fluid. Look around for residual oil, other fluids, and grease. Check hoses and belts for crack, brittleness, and abnormal softness.

Trunk: Make sure the trunk lever works. Make sure there's a spare, lug, and jack.

Undercarriage: Grease, oil, holes,rust. What else can you learn from underneath?

Tailpipe: A black greasy residue indicates burnt oil. It should be gray and mostly dry if perfectly healthy. Of course, burning oil is common in older cars, and not necessarily a red flag. But is the seller forthcoming about the fact that it burns oil?

Winter Driving Checklist

For a safe and comfortable daily driving experience in the winter months, we recommend having these items in your vehicle. Some of it, you’ll only have to purchase once. All of it, you’ll be glad you have.

Every item on the list is available at your local auto parts store or a store like Walmart.

Choose high performance windshield wipers.

We know the winter months in the Greater Seattle are fraught with rain, water, moisture, mist, drizzle and precipitation. What you might not know is how much you’ll appreciate having high performance windshield wipers, known as beam style wipers. They make for a better and safer experience while driving in rain, because they’re designed to contour more tightly to your windshield, thoroughly squeaking away any water. Save money, too: they perform better, and for significantly longer. The overhead pays for itself.

Cost: ~13-30 dollars per wiper , depending on length and quality

Get a window scraper.

The least favorite card in your wallet works fine, but only while you’re thinking about it from the comfort of a heated environment. You’re going to actually scrape the whole window if you have a real scraper. Compared to using a card, its even going to be fun.

Cost: 5-15 dollars.

Tip: Get one with a nice brush on it for sweeping the snow cover off your windshield, hood and headlight.

Clean and restore your headlights.

When your headlights seem dimmer than before, scuffing and discoloration is probably the cause. You’ll know if your headlight lenses are in good condition if they’re crystal clear after you wipe/scrub them. If not, you can quite easily restore them to crystal clarity with a satisfying buffing process that only takes a few minutes. All parts needed are included. The kits are usually good for multiple restorations.

Cost: $16-25 for a kit that has enough for multiple uses.

Get tire chains.

If your vehicle is 2wd, now is always the best time to put chains in your trunk. If the snow/ice hits hard and suddenly, you won’t have time to go buy them. You’ll be stuck. And even though nobody in Western Washington goes to work if flurries fly, you’ll still need tire chains so you can take your kids sledding. Tire chains are a one time purchase that lasts the life of your car, and you’ll probably use next winter, if not this one.

Cost: $100-$150

Have an emergency kit.

A breakdown in the winter cold can be dangerous. You’re more likely to end up on the shoulder or in the ditch when there’s ice on the roads, and more likely to be stuck for a while. If a big snowstorm locks up freeway traffic, you might find yourself sleeping on the side of the road. If you have kids, you’ll need to be extra prepared. Here are a few suggestions for what you might keep in your car:

Blankets
Coats
Flashlights w/ extra batteries
A shovel to get yourself out of a snowdrift
Gloves

Ask yourself if there’s any other needs you might have if you were to find yourself stuck out in the cold.

Rock salt for ice.
